At her tender age, she has beaten all odds to make World class music. She opens up about fashion and the future of her musical journey in this candid exclusive interview.
Tell us something about yourself?
My name is Jathson, I'm soon turning 22, I'm an Italo - Kenyan, born in Nairobi and currently based in Milan. I’m blessed enough to say that I work and I’m growing in fields that I’ve always been passionate about: being Fashion, Acting and of course Music. I consider myself to be a multidisciplinary creative/ artist or as I like to say, with a more dramatic twist, an “Art bound human being”.Being able to create and express myself by manipulating my feelings and personal luggage, for me it's a genuine blessing, a duty and fundamental state of being.
- How did you venture into music?
I’ve always been into music, However, the official beginning as an active recording artist was in 2015, when I was 14. My voice was really shaky. I started with my first featuring on a Hip Hop, Trap new wave beat in English, with Tyrone De Dieu as rap lead, Umberto who has a beautiful mellow voice sang the chorus and I had one of the freshest rap verses I think I ever wrote in that period.
- How would you describe your style?
Hyper contaminated and consequently flexible, versatile. I’ve always felt this way since childhood, and at the time it manifested in how I used to put my fits together to go to school. Now it shows in every aspect of my persona and in what I do and conceive.
How would you describe your songwriting style?
Technically speaking, my songwriting style has evolved with time and I’m positive that there’s still a lot of room for improvement and mastering the craft fully. At the moment, I just go with the general flow. I don’t really write songs in my free time, what I do write has more of a poetry and essay type of approach.
- What about your videos?
I’m very passionate and strict about what my visuals need to look like, also due to having a strong identity and personality. I've always managed this aspect by myself, meaning I am usually 100% involved in the creative direction of my music videos.
- How have your Italian fans embraced you?
I feel like there’s appreciation for my craft and excitement to see the journey get brighter and brighter. I’m really thankful for those who were present and participative since day one and are still here to support hardcore. It’s sort of crazy to me somehow, but I admire and love the loyalty.
- What brings you to Kenya?
I’ve come back to Kenya because I finally had the chance to, after this whole covid situation. Being born and having spent most of my childhood summers here I feel very connected to the country in its entirety.
- What do you think is different between the Italian music scene and the Kenyan one?
The differences between the Kenyan and Italian market are pretty tangible; I feel like in Italy in particular, the industry is extremely oversaturated with kids who don’t quite have the right reasons for creating (whether it’s music, art or fashion) which results in poor quality and emotion filled “products”.It feels sterile and lacking depth and an authentic identity behind it. But when it comes to the Kenyan market, I can tell that people are still having fun, smiling and enjoying what they’re doing mainly due to purpose and genuinity in what and how they present themselves and their art.
Your song 150k is causing waves globally. What about it?
150 K is the first release from the upcoming album we have in store for you. It seemed like the best first approach to what’s about to come, testing the waters and seeing if people are able to grasp the experience. Which thankfully they are. This makes me hyper excited and highly motivated to give my all limitlessly.
- What next from you?
Definitely new music, new projects in cinema and fashion as well as presence of different art forms combined together what we’ll be released into the atmosphere. Also excited that my upcoming album with the Lemurs, will be brought to light in the first months of 2024.
