Jimal Ibrahim, Chairman, Huduma Credit - "E - bikes to cut cost of fuel and conserve the environment."

As the world gears towards the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, Kenya is not being left behind as motor motorists are going for the alternative. Fuelled by the difficult times that have seen the rise of fuel prices thereby affecting the cost of commodities, investors in the public transport sectors within Nairobi and its environs are quickly embracing the privilege of using e - energy. The change, which is largely environmentally friendly and cost effective has seen the registration of over 1,400 2, 3 and 4-wheeler electric vehicles by mid this year. Huduma credit, a non-deposit-taking lending company with a key focus on financing PSV, is working closely with boda boda operators in a bid to assist them in acquiring new motorcycles or finance for their conversion from fuel use to electric use at friendly rates. "We want to be the game changer in this sector. There has been so much public outcry about the cost of living and in particular the escalating prices of fuel due to the dollar rate. At a small rate, we can convert a motorcycle to electric mode within hours, thereby saving the operator from the wrath of the high fuel costs", says the founding chairman Jimal Ibrahim.

Jimal alludes that Huduma credit boasts as the country's motorbike financer that is on the forefront of supporting small businesses. "With an e-bike, an operator is able to save up to 40 - 50% of his daily earnings as he pays for his e-bike loan comfortably. He is only required to charge the battery at designated stations within Nairobi." A fully charged battery is estimated to cover a distance of 80 - 100 kms. "Normal statics show than an operator doing errands within Nairobi, can cover up to 130 kms, therefore with our bikes that can guarantee an entire day of busy errands." The financing solutions company has further stated that they will waive the 20% deposit fee for the first 20 purchasers of their electric bikes. "The first 20 purchasers will acquire the bikes with no initial cost at all." The e-bikes, credited by increased efficiency and their environmental impact demonstrates the president's commitment to clean energy and supporting small businesses. This offer is sure to generate excitement among the bodaboda community.
