Enough is enough. It is time to take action
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has threatened to
take stern action against the rising cases of imposters on social media who are
using his name to dupe unsuspecting individuals. This comes amidst a growing
number of social media pages using his name to solicit funds in the pretence to
award beneficiaries only to realize once it is too late that they were tricked
into dubious deals. Some of the social media pages shared by the former county
boss offered loans and other monetary boosts. 'Sonko soft loans', 'Hon Mike
Mbuvi Sonko loans' are some of the pseudo accounts bearing his photos that he
reported that demanded that individuals match a certain criteria to qualify for
the rewards. "I need to reward 4 people with 150,000 shillings each, a
motorcycle" were some of the rewards promised to be distributed attracting
hundreds of likes from unsuspecting victims.
Sonko however flagged the pages and
threatened to take action. "I hereby declare that through the help of DCI and
other government investigative agencies we are coming for you. Enough is enough
from these cons using my name to dupe Kenyans," he declared. According some of the
victims who claimed to have fallen for the trap, some had been offered paybill
numbers to deposit a registration fee to be enrolled in the lending
programs only for them to realise when it was too late.
"I saw the adverts on
social media and didn't think twice only to realise that the paybill number had
no relations with Sonko," claimed one. Others in the comment section had
innocently requested to be lent sums of up to 70 thousand shillings. Culprits of
the congame are yet to be apprehended.
