Mary Muthoni, HSC - Correctional Services PS ensuring improved welfare for inmates in the country.

BY S. Koko

The Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuki, HSC has encouraged Kenyans to visit any correctional institution in the country where they can select and purchase items made by the inmates. As part of her familiarization visits to different correctional facilities where she gets to meet prison authorities as well as mingle with the inmates, Ms Muthoni acknowledged that this would help inmates acquire new skills that will help in being self dependent and contribute to their re-intergration into the society once freed.

"I urge government agencies and even the public to visit any correctional institutions in the country and you will get the great items and merchandise created by our inmates as part of our rehabilitation program. This prepares them for proper re-integration into the society once they complete their terms," she encouraged.

Since her appointment by President William Ruto, Ms Muthoni has been on a rigorous close check on institutions to improve the welfare of inmates as she traverses the country's correctional facilities.

She recently launched a program that will ensure the improvement of the welfare for the inmates by introducing a 1 prisoner, 1 bed, 1 blanket initiative where she distributed over 800 bedding for inmates. Amongst other engagements, Ms Muthoni has been in the forefront for tree planting in which prisons target to plant 10 million trees in a decongestion drive that will see petty offenders freed.

Correctional facilities in Kenya have previously been criticized for humiliating prisoners and failing to observe Human Rights.

Since their formation, prisons have gone through a number of reforms that has seen inmates enjoy facilities such as television sets, computers and educational facilities. This is because the Kenya’s correctional facilities intend to cultivate good morals in the inmates as compared to humiliation as often perceived by the outside public.
